An 88-year-old man crashed a car into a Giant supermarket at Leisure World Plaza in Silver Spring, Md., authorities said.
A spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service said the incident took place at around 3 p.m. The car drove through metal barriers, then crashed into the wall and into the store’s checkout area, the spokesman said.
The car’s passenger, an 84-year-old woman, and a bystander were taken to MedStar Montgomery Medical Center for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening, authorities said. No further information about the cause of the crash was immediately available, and no arrests were made, Montgomery County Police said.
Though the Giant’s pharmacy is serving customers on a case-by-case basis, the store is otherwise closed as county building inspectors examine its structural integrity, authorities said.
Dramatic images of the destruction were circulated on social media.
